Lockdown until May 20, primary schools open May 11 and no events in summer | NOW

The restrictive measures against the coronavirus, which were in force until April 28, are extended until May 19. Primary school children can return to school from 11 May. Prime Minister Mark Rutte will announce this at a press conference on Tuesday at 7 p.m., sources confirm to NU.nl after reports by RTL News.

The other measures, including the closure of restaurants and cafés and also the visiting arrangement for care homes, will be extended by three weeks.

A week before May 19, the cabinet will decide on this package again. The ban on events requiring permits is extended from July 1 to September 1.

It will again be possible for children up to the age of 12 to exercise outside without keeping a distance of 1.5 meters. Workouts can be resumed again, competitions not yet. From May 11, children can also go to childcare, out-of-school care or special education.

Young people between the ages of twelve and eighteen can also train again, but at least 1.5 meters apart. For the time being, adults cannot yet go to their sports club or gym.

To the dentist, not to the hairdresser

Dentists and dental hygienists can also open the doors again. They have their own protective equipment and therefore closure was not necessary in the first instance. Hairdressers and beauty salons, for example, must remain closed for the time being.

Earlier on Tuesday, the advice from the OMT (Outbreak Management Team) to the cabinet already leaked. This included the advice to let primary schools “start preparations for half an occupancy per day”. It is not yet clear how the schools should approach this. We are also waiting for the opening of schools in Scandinavian countries. The OMT is looking for more scientific evidence in this area.
