More than 50 forest fires raged today firefighters on the Greek island of Euboea. They were inflamed by the strong wind and caused the evacuation of the coastal village of Niborio, AFP reported.
“51 fires broke out today,” Greek Deputy Civil Protection Minister Nikos Hardalias said.
According to initial information, the source of the fire was in a forest. The island of Euboea is part of the Attica region, which also includes the Greek capital Athens.
About 500 people, mostly holidaymakers, left the village of Niborio in a panic before the official evacuation order was issued.
“Because of the wind, the fire moved south. That was why Niborio residents were asked to evacuate.the angry element is not under control, but there is no threat houses or infrastructure, “Hardalias explained.
“The situation continues to be a nightmare, despite the battle we are fighting by land and air,” admitted the mayor of Karistos, the smallest coastal town on the Greek island of Euboea, home to about 5,000 people.
