Local media: Dozens dead and hundreds seriously injured after Java earthquake | Abroad

An earthquake on the Indonesian island of Java killed at least dozens on Monday, according to local media. Hundreds of others are said to have been injured. The shock was of magnitude 5.6 and was felt, among others, in the capital Jakarta.

The National Disaster Relief Service is currently trying to clarify the exact number of victims. Authorities are still assessing the exact damages. It is clear that several dozen buildings were damaged, including an Islamic college, a hospital and other public buildings.

A government official from West Java province spoke to local media about nearly twenty dead and, according to him, at least three hundred injured are being treated at the local hospital where they died. These numbers have not been officially confirmed.

The epicenter was in the West Java town of Cianjur, about 75 kilometers southeast of Jakarta, the Indonesian Meteorology Agency (BMKG) reported. The quake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers. In the two hours following the quake, the BMKG recorded 25 aftershocks. There was no danger of a tsunami.

As far as is known, there are no victims in the capital Jakarta. There, buildings started shaking and people were evacuated from offices, among other things.
