LIVE | Stores in Belgium open again December 1 | Inland

Non-essential stores in Belgium, such as clothing or furniture stores and the Hema, may reopen on 1 December. This has been decided by the consultation committee of the federal and regional governments, report the main Belgian media.

There would be strict conditions attached to shopping, but details are not yet known. According to De Morgen, shopping should be done solo and for a maximum of thirty minutes.

The shops that sell unnecessary items have been closed for three weeks due to the revived corona virus. That is the second time since the outbreak in the spring. Many Belgians have therefore crossed the border in recent weeks, despite the government advising against ‘non-essential travel’ and, to the dismay of Belgian retailers, to go shopping in Eindhoven or Aachen, for example. Supermarkets, pharmacies, drugstores, DIY stores, garden centers and bookstores were allowed to remain open. Hairdressers and beauticians are said to remain closed until mid-December.

The Consultation Committee with Prime Minister Alexander De Croo is still in progress. It must also decide on the social contacts that Belgians are allowed to have outside their household. There are calls to allow more social contacts around Christmas.
