LIVE | Role of ventilation in Maassluis corona outbreak ‘cannot be traced’ | Inland

Whether the ventilation system in De Tweemaster nursing home in Maassluis played a role in the deadly outbreak of the corona virus there, “can no longer be determined.” This is the conclusion of the GGD Rotterdam-Rijnmond in a study published on Thursday. In late June and early July, 17 of the 22 residents and 18 of the 34 employees in the nursing home became infected with corona. Seven residents died from the effects of the virus.

The outbreak started when a resident started coughing and suffering from a cold on June 17. This looked like a corona infection, but it was not determined until after the third test. This patient, who died on July 15, is believed to have infected several other residents. A week later, sixteen inmates became ill.

Employees wore surgical masks all the time, but sometimes they wore them for too long. It cannot be ruled out that they have been contaminated by residents. Five employees continued to work while they had complaints. During their breaks, the caregivers took off their masks, sitting less than 1.5 meters apart. That is how they probably ignited each other.

The investigation also shows that multiple versions of the virus were circulating in the same building at the same time. Sixteen people had one variant and together formed a cluster, four other infections can also be linked to each other. One patient probably does not belong to either group, but that contamination has not spread further.

In the ventilation system of De Tweemaster, the researchers found “a very low amount” of traces of the corona virus. This indicates “that the virus was present and settled in the living room,” but that is not to say that there were enough virus particles in the air “to infect those present over a longer distance.”
