LIVE | Pandemic death toll in excess of 750,000 worldwide | Abroad

The coronavirus has now claimed the lives of more than 750,000 patients worldwide. More than 20 million people have been found to be infected.

The virus emerged in China at the end of last year and then spread around the world. The death toll has doubled since June 2, according to the AFP news agency. In the last seventeen days alone, 100,000 patients died.

According to official figures, the virus has cost many lives in the United States (more than 166,000 deaths), Brazil (104,000), Mexico (54,000) and India (47,000). Those countries together account for almost half of the total number of victims reported worldwide.

Latin America and the Caribbean are the worst affected regions. More than 18,600 patients died there in the past week, according to AFP. The death toll stands at 228,572 in total.
