On May 24, the ensemble will perform a new concert program “21+” in the 1st studio of Latvijas Radio and in the live broadcast of “Klasika” Altera Veritas, with musicians Ieva Mežgaile and Anda Eglīte, flutist Andis Klučnieks and accordionist Artūrs Noviks.

The concert, which is supported by the State Cultural Capital Fund, is conducted and the “Klasika” program manager talks to the musicians. Dina Dudia-Kurmiņa.

With the “21+” program, the ensemble would like to thank its teachers and friends who have been with it for twenty-one years, all the composers who have dedicated wonderful compositions to it, and, of course, their loyal listeners, allowing them to experience a wonderful palette of emotions.

Concert program selected significant composition in the history of the ensemblei – Agnes Meistere’s “Unusual Child”, Valdis Zilvera In memory of singing, Two parts of Gundega Šmite ‘s cycle “Watching … dreaming …” as well two premieres.

Erika Eschenwald’s new work “Strange. In the Distances. Quiet.” for an unprecedented composition – an ensemble Altera Veritas and piano, dedication Altera Veritas former lecturer at the Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music – pianist and professor Jānis Maļeckis, who also premiered these compositions.

The second premiere will be Jacob Niemann’s “Diptych. Portraits”in which the ensemble Altera Veritas will join its friends in music – ensemble “Breakfast for four”, in which pianist Mārtiņš Zilberts, double bassist Jānis Stafeckis, flutist Andis Klučnieks and percussionist Aivars Krastiņš play. Creative freedom and freedom of interpretation is an ensemble “Breakfast for four” feature.

Ensemble Altera Veritas at one time launched a fundamentally new view of both the percussion and the repertoire of folk instruments. Altera Veritas (“another truth” – in Latin) was created in May 1999 with the aim of playing original music programs of contemporary Latvian composers for a non-traditional and world-unique instrumental composition – kokle, flute and accordion.

The unusual, unique composition and sound possibilities of the ensemble have encouraged many Latvian and foreign composers to dedicate their compositions directly. Altera Veritas – more than 80 compositions have been created during the ensemble’s 20 years of existence. The repertoire of the musicians’ association consists of such outstanding composers as Ēriks Ešenvalds, Georgs Pelēčs, Andris Dzenītis, Gundega Šmites, Vilnius Šmīdbergs, Imants Mežaraups, Kristaps Pētersons, Mārtiņš Viļums, Alvils Altmanis, Pēteris Plakids, Valdis Ziliks

Altera Veritas has performed in numerous solo concerts both in Latvia and abroad – in Germany, Portugal, Switzerland, Turkey, Russia, Lithuania, Sweden, Norway, Estonia, Slovakia. The ensemble has also participated in various festivals, competitions, symposia, receptions organized by state officials, Latvian Radio and Latvian Television, recorded two CDs, collaborated with various ensembles, choirs and orchestras (including the vocal group Schola Cantorum Riga, trio Art-i-Shock, Latvian Radio Choir, VAK “Latvia”, choir “While …”, orchestras “Riga Chamber Musicians”, Liepaja Symphony Orchestra).

Ensemble Altera Veritas performance has been recognized with the “Grand Music Prize 2003” and the newspaper “Diena” Annual Award in Culture (2005).

Pianist, JVLMA professor Jānis Maļeckis combines outstanding pedagogical work with active concert activities around the world. In addition to music, he is also known for his works in painting, which have been exhibited in Latvia, Belgium, Norway and the USA. Jānis Maļeckis was present at the birth of the ensemble Altera Veritas with his advice.
