The cabinet’s crisis committee (MCCb) will decide on Wednesday whether gyms and saunas can open earlier than planned. The Cabinet previously indicated that these sectors might open again on 1 September, but first wanted to await the advice of the Outbreak Management Team (OMT). The gyms and saunas want to open earlier.
The experts from the OMT said in a confidential advice on Tuesday that there is still too much unclear about the risk of infection in gyms, to give concrete advice to the cabinet about reopening. It is not clear what the most involved ministers are doing with this. Usually the MCCb follows the advice in terms of content.
Branch organization NL Actief spoke to Minister Martin van Rijn (Sport) earlier this month and proposed additional measures to reduce the risks. For example, there could be less intensive sports, and fewer people and equipment could enter the gym.
The next two Wednesdays, there is still crisis deliberation about the corona virus. After that, the MCCb will decide for itself whether to continue with the weekly frequency or not.
More and more corona measures have relaxed in recent weeks. On 1 June, the downscaling will continue with, among other things, the partial opening of the catering industry, cultural institutions and cinemas. Secondary schools are also starting again. Earlier, the cabinet called this relaxation exciting because public life is gaining momentum. It can only be seen after two to three weeks whether this leads to more infections.
