LIVE

The coronavirus continues to spread in Europe and worldwide. Italy has passed the thousand contaminations on Saturday, while France now has 100 proven cases. Faced with this situation, the French government has announced several measures, including the cancellation of several events, such as the Paris half-marathon which was to take place this Sunday. Follow the situation live.

The main information to remember:

  • The number of cases recorded in France rose to 100 on Saturday
  • New events, including the Villeurbanne-Monaco basketball game were canceled on Sunday
  • Italy exceeds 1,000 cases and the number of cases is increasing again in China

100 cases have been found in France

France has symbolically reached 100 cases of coronavirus since the end of January, announced on Saturday the Director General of Health Jérôme Salomon. Of these 100 cases, 12 people have been cured, 2 have died and 86 have been hospitalized, including 9 in serious condition. The importance of the new assessment “is linked to a large cluster (grouping of cases) in the Oise”, particularly affected by the virus, according to Jérôme Salomon. “The investigation of the two initial cases in the Oise made it possible to detect this important ‘cluster’ which is now 36 cases in total – therefore more than 18 compared to yesterday – through professional and family contacts”, he said. he continued.

A second ‘cluster’ is located in Haute-Savoie, where the mayor of the village of La Balme-de-Sillingy, which has several cases, announced in turn that he was sick with the virus and hospitalized on Saturday evening. Important precautionary measures have been taken in the commune to avoid new cases, such as the suspension of all public events. Before being tested positive, the city councilor had gone to the Salon de l’Agriculture, where he had notably met the European Union negotiator Michel Barnier.

The Brittany Regional Health Agency also announced that a couple who had recently stayed in the Oise had been diagnosed and hospitalized in Rennes.

Several canceled events

To cope with this acceleration, the Minister of Health Olivier Véran announced several measures on Saturday, including the cancellation of all gatherings “of more than 5,000 people in a confined environment”. Similar cancellations are planned for gatherings “in an open environment when they lead to mixtures with populations from areas where the virus is possibly circulating”. The Paris half-marathon, which was to take place on Sunday, was also canceled, unlike the Ligue 1 football matches, which have been maintained. The basketball match between Villeurbanne and Monaco has been postponed.

On Sunday, the French Council for Muslim Faith (CFCM) asked imams and managers of mosques in France to take measures to prevent the spread of the virus. In an “urgent message” to the heads of places of worship, its president Mohammed Moussaoui recalls “some simple but useful advices”, among which “avoid shaking hands and privilege the oral and remote greeting”.

Italy exceeds 1,000 cases

Italy has exceeded a thousand contaminations with the new coronavirus and recorded 29 deaths, including 8 in 24 hours, in three regions of the north of the country. The three most affected regions – Lombardy, Emilia-Romagna and Veneto – have asked the government to keep their schools for an additional week to stop the spread.

In China, where the epidemic is approaching 80,000 cases for 2,870 deaths, the National Commission (Ministry) of Health announced Sunday a daily report of 573 new cases of contamination, the heaviest total for a week.
