147 of the 657 employees of a meat processing company in Groenlo are infected with the corona virus. Most infections (79) have been diagnosed in employees who live in Germany, the other 68 infected employees live in the Netherlands, reports the GGD Noord- en Oost-Gelderland.

Last week, the slaughterhouse in Groenlo of slaughterhouse and meat processor Vion was immediately closed due to an outbreak of the corona virus. In a sample of 212 employees, 45 tested positive for the lung virus. The results of the sample prompted the GGD Noord- and Oost-Gelderland to test the other employees as well.

In shock

Vion is shocked by the large number of infections (22 percent) in Groenlo. “The health and safety of all our employees are priority number 1. The shock is because this is the first time that a group of people who have no health complaints have been tested. And then 147 people from this group turn out to have the virus without complaints ”, says Ronald Lotgerink, CEO Vion Food Group. According to him, Vion has “continuously taken all necessary measures to ensure the protection of the health of its employees.”

The company will consult with the GGD, the Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) and the safety region about the conditions under which work can again be carried out at this establishment. Lotgerink: “In doing so, Vion will explicitly examine all measures taken so far and make improvements if there is reason to do so and within the possibilities that the company has. This concerns the working environment, the living situation of the employees as well as the transport to the location. ”

The location in Groenlo has been closed since Wednesday. Meat production is temporarily moved to other Vion locations in the Netherlands. Vion is an international food company with locations in the Netherlands and Germany and offices in thirteen countries.

The CNV union already stated on Wednesday that the meat sector largely revolves around migrant workers and flex workers, who often live close to each other and go to work in groups. “We have warned several times how vulnerable the sector is. We are not at all surprised that there is now a corona fireplace again. The sector must temporarily drastically reduce production and now first fully invest in a safe workplace, ”said CNV driver Peter de Ridder.
