A 31-year-old man from Alabama in the USA has received wide attention after he was arrested for leaving flowers on his fiancé’s grave.

His fiancé, Hannah Ford (26), died in a car accident in 2021. The accident happened one month after the couple got engaged.

Charged with littering

The man was charged with littering the gravesite after leaving a flowerpot on his fiancé’s grave.

Hannah Ford’s father owns the cemetery at Auburn’s Memorial Park in Alabama.

When the case came to court on Thursday, the father made it clear that he did not accept the daughter’s relationship with the accused.

The grieving man explained in court that his fiancée did not like dead, cut flowers. Therefore, he had made a flower pot with live flowers which he decorated with pictures of the couple.

The future father-in-law did not like it.

The flower pots were removed, but when the fourth box was placed at the grave without permission, he took action.

Did not expect jail

In total, the 31-year-old removed nine flower pots from the burial site, it emerged in court.

The fiancé is said to have admitted that he asked the municipality for permission to lay down the flower pot by the grave. In response, he is said to have received that it was okay as long as the family did not have any objections to it.

However, he did not expect to end up in prison for it.

According to the cemetery’s administration, it is not allowed to place urns or boxes, toys or other similar objects at the grave.

An employee at the cemetery claimed in court that the grieving fiancé should have been informed of this, and asked not to continue replacing the flower pots at the grave.

She claims that the 31-year-old was warned that if he did not stop, he could risk legal consequences – which could lead to him being arrested.

The accused’s lawyer asked the court to dismiss the case. He claimed that there was a lack of information and that there was confusion about flowers being seen as litter.

Judge McLaughlin, however, denied the request, saying the flowerpot was a foreign object that did not belong in the cemetery.

Sentenced to a fine

The grieving fiancé was sentenced to pay $ 50 for littering, as well as a $ 250 fine.

This corresponds to a total of approximately NOK 3,000.

The fiancé escapes prison, but was told that if he continued to leave flower pots on the grave, he would be imprisoned.

According to the WBRC, the 31-year-old plans to appeal the verdict. He has 14 days before the verdict is final.
