Two children of illegal migrants, who came to the resuscitation department of Alytus Hospital from Belarus on Thursday immediately after arriving in Lithuania, have been poisoned with psychotropic substances, but are currently feeling better, Dmitry Kacurin, the hospital’s deputy director, told the Lithuanian public broadcaster Lrt.lt on Friday.

Border guards from 15 groups of illegal migrants were reportedly detained in the Varena district on Thursday morning, and adults immediately approached the border guards with concerns about the health of their children. Border guards called an ambulance, which took the children to the hospital.

According to the parents, in Belarus, before crossing the border, the companions of a group of migrants wearing masks gave their children pills so that they could behave more calmly.

Another tablet was given with the parents if it later turned out to be needed in Lithuania. The border guards handed over the pill to doctors so they could judge what caused the children’s health problems.

According to Kacurin, it is quite clear that both children are poisoned with psychotropic substances, but today they feel better and have already moved from resuscitation to the children’s ward, and tomorrow will probably be able to join the parents.

In connection with the incident, the Lithuanian Border Guard Service (SBGS) has launched a pre-trial investigation into serious health disorders due to negligence, which can result in imprisonment for up to five years.

Lithuanian officials believe that the Belarussian regime is deliberately facilitating the flow of migrants across the border between the two countries, where more than 2,400 illegal migrants have been detained since the beginning of the year – 30 times more than in the whole of 2020.
