WHAT IS THE BACKGROUND? At the end of last season, Messi in the Paris Saint-Germain jersey surpassed Cristiano Ronaldo’s mark with his 496th goal in one of Europe’s top five leagues. In doing so, he also snagged the overall lead in the Guinness world record rating.
The Argentine achieved other records including being the youngest player to score 50 Champions League goals and being named Man of the Match in World Cup games, where he was honored 11 times.
Ronaldo can counter this, among other things, as the highest-earning professional footballer in the world.
