Lionel Messi switched to Paris Saint-Germain in the summer of 2021 after 21 years in Barcelona, where he signed a two-year contract with an option for a further year on both sides.
However, Barcelona can hardly afford the 34-year-old next summer.

Xavi: Barcelona owe a lot to Messi
“I think Messi is the best player ever and in the history of the club. The doors will be open to him and as long as I’m the coach he can come here any day,” said the 42-year-old. Messi can come anytime “to watch training or to talk to the coach”.
After all, the club owes Messi “a great tribute for the merits of the past. That’s the way it has to be, because what he gave us is priceless.”
Of course, Barça fans are now hoping that Messi might return to the Catalans in 2023. Xavi only said: “He has a contract with PSG – that’s all I can say.”
Messi and Neymar whistled at PSG
In La Liga, meanwhile, Barça are 15 points behind Los Blancos in third place despite four straight wins.
As Real coach Carlo Ancelotti announced on Saturday, the record champions will have to do without their in-form star striker Karim Benzema (calf injury).
