Lion male Dudley dies in Wildlands

Lion male Dudley from Wildlands has died. He is almost sixteen years old. According to the zoo, that is an old age for lions.

Dudley had been eating poorly and breathing heavier lately. He also lost weight. Wildlands had kept the male in the indoor enclosure for some time for observation, diagnosis and treatment. Unfortunately for Dudley, medication did not work and it was decided to put him to sleep.

Trade with Zulu

He was transferred for autopsy to the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Utrecht.

Dudley came from the Scottish Blair Drummond Safari Park to Emmen in 2016 after the lion male Zulu got into an argument with the lion sisters Tia and Brandy. Zulu went the other way, where he passed away last year at the age of thirteen.

Seven children

Dudley eventually got on well with the sisters and had a litter of three in 2016 and a litter of two in 2019. Two of Dudley’s daughters moved to another European zoo a few weeks ago to form a group with a male from Arnhem.

Dudley also had children from his time in Scotland. His two daughters now have six grandchildren.

It is not yet clear whether a new man will be added to the group in Emmen in the short term; As soon as the park knows how the loss of Dudley will be handled, it will be announced.
