Limburg needs blood donors, do you sign up?

Sanquin is looking for 6000 new blood and plasma donors in Limburg this year. Especially in Venlo, the blood bank has room to welcome new donors.

One in four people will ever need (life-saving) donated blood and more and more people are being saved with a medicine made from plasma. While less than three percent of people are donors. The need is therefore immediately clear: Sanquin is looking for new donors on behalf of the whole of the Netherlands. In the province of Limburg no less than 6000 in the coming year. The growth is necessary to maintain the blood supply in the Netherlands and also to meet the increasing demand for plasma medicines. The gift of donors

Suzanne Vinken from the Roermond area knows better than anyone how important donors are. She has an immune disorder, hypogammaglobulinemia, which makes her often sick and tired. “I am therefore dependent on medicines from plasma. Every week a nurse comes to my home to put on an IV with antibodies from donors. Without plasma drug, my life would be completely dominated by being sick and I would continue to deteriorate. Because of the gift of donors, with a little planning and policy, I can do everything I like.”

A while ago Suzanne received her 200th infusion, which she celebrated extensively. “I was able to celebrate thanks to the blood and plasma donors. Donors have a special place in my heart. If you consider that a donor gives plasma, the antibodies are extracted from there, they are bundled from a thousand donors and that goes into my IV. † † I think that’s magical!”

Serious Injuries and Cancer Treatment

Donor blood is indispensable, for example for people who have lost a lot of blood as a result of an accident or childbirth. In addition, a large part of the donated blood goes to cancer patients to help them during their cancer treatment.

Plasma is less known, but is used for more and more diseases and disorders. For example in the treatment of severe burns, but also in autoimmune and coagulation disorders. Thousands of people in the Netherlands depend for their lives on medicines made from plasma from donors.

Donate in Venlo

In North Limburg, blood and plasma donors can go to the blood bank in Venlo. Blood bank team leader Emmy Kisters is ready for them: “We have a nice spacious blood bank location here where we would like to welcome more donors! Donors really do something special. We also call them heroes without capes. And we make donating something fun here in Venlo!”
