Lille needed a spectacular late shot from Luis Araujo to save the 1-1 draw at Montpellier.

PARIS (AFP) – French Ligue 1 leaders Lille needed a spectacular goal from Luis Araujo to save a 1-1 home draw against Montpellier on Friday, and Paris Saint-Germain gave the opportunity to turn the screw in the title race.

Lille rose to 70 points, but defending champions PSG can close the gap to just one point if they beat Saint-Étienne on Sunday.

Andy Delort put Montpellier in the lead in the 21st minute on Friday.

But Brazilian Luis Araujo drew a well-deserved draw with five minutes remaining with a memorable half volley.

Lille had the misfortune of not having taken the lead early in the game when Benjamin André’s shot came off the post in the 57th minute.

“We ended the game well by controlling the game and putting pressure on them, but unfortunately we could only score one goal,” said Lille coach Christophe Galtier.

“We missed a few points, but we’ll get an update on Sunday at 10.55pm.”

Montpellier are a determined team and they have played 14 matches in all competitions without losing.

They are eighth and still well positioned to claim a European place next season.
