Liguria, construction sites and traffic: queues and chaos on the weekend highways

Another difficult weekend is expected on the roads of Liguria – starting from today Friday -; travel to holiday resorts is very intense and overlaps with ordinary traffic. But to make the situation even more critical there are a series of construction sites, both along the A10 and A12, the two highways that run along the Ponente and the Levante; construction sites which were opened after the lockdown and which concern infrastructure maintenance and safety works. Difficulty also for those who leave the car in the garage and choose the train: the rides will only be intensified starting from July 1st and at the moment the distancing rules on the trains limit the capacity to 70%.

6.45 pm – The situation: queues on the rise

The traffic jams along the Ligurian road network are increasing. The most problematic queue remains that between Genoa and Recco, in the direction of Livorno, which has reached 12 kilometers. Instead, the one between Celle Ligure and Savona has reached 4 kilometers. Another 7 km cap formed between Varazze and Savona. The other blockages are unchanged. Difficult traffic also on secondary roads, starting from Aurelia, especially in the western sector, again due to restrictions due to road construction sites.

5.40 pm – Toti: We will not allow paralysis

We will not allow Liguria to remain paralyzed. Seriousness, speed and an alternative plan are needed that allow the region to start again and the Ligurians and the many tourists not to stay in line for a few kilometers. So we can’t go on !. So on Facebook the governor of Liguria, Giovanni Toti. The knot always remains that of inspections and works scheduled during the summer; works and inspections left in arrears for the Covid emergency but which, if implemented according to the timetable set by Autostrade, risk blocking regional traffic in the tourist season.

17.20 – Queues also towards the North

Yet another construction site is causing queues to form also towards the north, in particular at the crossroads between the A10 (coming from Ventimiglia) and the A26 towards Gravellona Toce.

5.15 pm – The requests of the mayors

Autostrade crushes the Riviera di Levante. The situation is no longer sustainable !. So the mayor of Rapallo Carlo Bagnasco comments on the notification, which took place yesterday at 15.44, with which Aspi communicated the closure of the Rapallo – Chiavari section (on the A12) from 22 to 6 in both directions. A decision, Bagnasco writes, that will completely paralyze the viability of the city of Rapallo. It is no longer permissible that peremptory communications of closures arrive that do not take into account the summer season. Subsequently, Aspi communicated that the closure of the section scheduled in these hours will not take place. but other Ligurian mayors have written to the management company asking for the extension of works planned for the summer but which if put in place will compromise the tourist season

5pm – Fear of chaos also on trains

A weekend of chaos is also feared for rail transport. The user committee of the local Ligurian transport has written a letter to the Region and ministry to remember what happened on 20 and 21 June: The assault on convoys to and from the Riviere and the strong recovery of commuting involved: a) a total non-compliance with the basic anti-Covid safety standards19; b) a poor quality of the transport conditions due to the improbable crowds; c) the widespread non-purchase of a travel ticket also due to the non-issuance of tickets by ticket offices: the usual “smart ones” also took advantage of the almost total lack of Trenitalia control staff.

16.50 – The ministry: We pay 15 years for delays

Although I understand the fatigue and anger of Ligurian citizens for the inconvenience to road traffic, I can not forget that the construction sites in progress are the result of 15 years of neglect on which even the judiciary investigates, supervising together with the MIT on extraordinary maintenance interventions put in place. The Undersecretary for Infrastructures and Transport Roberto Traversi comments on the controversies on the situation of the Ligurian transport put to the test by the works of adaptation of the highway tunnels and the yards to the ordinary road network.

4.40 pm – Stop the collection of tolls

The difficulties of these days are caused by a series of inspections planned to ascertain the safety of the motorway network. The company plans a series of closures of different sections (a dozen in total) all in Liguria; closings should not concern weekends. The Ministry of Infrastructure was asked to remodel the inspection plan. The Liguria region and the road haulage companies have requested that the collection of tolls be suspended.

16.30 – 11 km queue between Genoa and Nervi

The most difficult situation is reported by Autostrade per l’Italia between the junction between the A7 (coming from Milan) and the A12 (in the direction of Livorno and the junction of Nervi: a road construction site caused a traffic jam that reached 11 kilometers Two kilometers long queue also between Celle Ligure and Savona, in the direction of Ventimiglia, always for works and between Bolzaneto and the beginning of Genoa-Livorno, always for works. Autostrade per l’Italia reports slowdowns also between Genova Nervi and Recco .
