Be careful when traveling with your identity card!

Yes, the identity card can be used as a travel document in certain countries. But when its validity is extended by 5 years, and therefore it is apparently out of date, this poses a problem.

The list is updated regularly on the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

For cards that are apparently out of date but whose validity is extended by 5 years, the authorities of the following countries have officially confirmed that they accept it as a travel document : Andorra, Bulgaria, Croatia, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, Montenegro, Czech Republic, San Marino, Serbia, Slovenia, Switzerland, Tunisia (only for binationals or people participating in group trips organized by a tourism professional) and Turkey.

The authorities of the following countries have not officially communicated their position as for their acceptance of the national identity card apparently outdated but whose validity is extended by 5 years as travel document: Germany, Austria, Cyprus, Denmark, Spain, Finland, Ireland, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, United Kingdom, Slovakia, Sweden, Liechtenstein, Vatican, Albania, North Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Egypt and Morocco (only for binationals or people participating in group trips organized by a tourism professional).

The authorities of the following countries do not recognize the apparently outdated national identity card but whose validity is extended by 5 years as a travel document: Belgium, Lithuania and Norway.
