On Thursday, the “Trek – Segafredo” team announced their composition for the third grand tour of the season “Vuelta a Espana”. To the delight of Latvian sports fans, the Dobel player is also included Emils Liepins, for whom this will be a debut in one of the grand tours.

The Vuelta a Espana multi-day bike ride is the final grand tour of the season. This year, it has been significantly affected by the Covid-19 virus. In addition to strict security measures, the originally planned route has also been changed. Instead of the usual 21 steps, 18 steps will have to be performed. The tour will start on Tuesday, October 20, and will end on November 8 in Madrid.

On Thursday, the US-registered unit “Trek – Segafredo” announced its composition for the competition. Emīls Liepiņš, a 27-year-old Dobel player, has also earned a place among eight riders. For our athlete, this will be his debut in one of the grand tours.

Emil, who will be representing “Trek – Segafredo” next year, excelled in the tour of Mallorca, where he finished twice in the TOP10 and contributed to the success of teammate Mateo Mosketi. He won the only podium this year in the Hungarian tour, where he finished second in the fourth stage.

The focus of the “Trek – Segafredo” tour on Spain will be to fight for victory in certain stages. The role of the team leader is given to Mosketti, who has successfully recovered from a serious injury after falling at the beginning of the season. Liepiņš, who is planned as the final assistant of Mateo, will also play a very important role. At the same time, Latvians will also be given their opportunities. Danish Niklass Egs could compete for a respectable result in the overall rating.

The main favorites in the fight for the overall rating will be Christopher Frumen (“Ineoss”), Tom Dumulen, Primožs Rogličs (“Jumbo – Visma”), Tibo Pino (“FDJ”), Alehandro Valverde (“Movistar”) and others.
