The events of the National Film Prize will take place this year from 12 to 15 November, both in the digital environment and in person, if the epidemiological situation in the country allows it. Already now, cinemas are gradually resuming their work, and it is planned that many Latvian films will start their way to their viewers at the end of summer or in the autumn, so the competition for the “Big Kristaps” awards will be intense.

Feature films, documentaries, animation and student films of any length, as well as co-productions and multi-series films – works completed after January 1, 2020 and not participating in the 2020 “Big Kristaps” competition can be submitted to the National Film Prize. Films made by Latvian students within the framework of studies at Latvian or foreign universities can be submitted to the student film competition.

As every year, the film evaluation will take place in two rounds – by the end of September, film experts representing professional film organizations and institutions will nominate nominees for awards, while during the Great Kristaps there will be an international jury to determine the winners in 8 film categories and 17 film professions. Traditionally, during the “Great Kristaps”, a prize for lifelong contribution to cinema will be presented, as well as special prizes for juries, spectators and supporters.

Ten experts will work in the National Film Award Selection Commission this year, nominated by professional organizations and institutions in the field – Latvian Cinematographers’ Union, Latvian Cinematographers’ Association, Latvian Screenwriters’ Guild, Latvian Cinematographers Guild, Latvian Cinematographers Guild, Latvian Film Sound Directors Guild, Latvian Film Artists Latvian branch, Latvian Animation Association and National Film Center. The list of films and professionals nominated for the awards will be announced at a press conference by October 15, 2021 and published on the website.
