WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The United States is discussing with some of the key players in the conflict in Libya the withdrawal of foreign forces ahead of the presidential and legislative elections scheduled for next December, the US special envoy for Libya said on Monday.

Speaking to reporters, Richard Norland stressed that one of the main challenges of the ballot was to put in place a legitimate, credible and full-power government so that it could force foreign actors to withdraw their soldiers from Libya.

“This will be a very important development (…) but we are not suggesting that we have to wait until next year to try to make progress,” he said ahead of the conference on Libya which will be held this week in Berlin and attended by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

“Negotiations are underway with some of the key players in an attempt to withdraw some of the mercenaries, foreign fighters,” added Richard Norland.
