Lībīņa-Egneri could be promoted to the position of Minister of Foreign Affairs

In the event that Lībiņa-Egnere moves to the chair of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the JV could nominate the former parliamentary secretary of the ministry, Lauma Paegļkalna, or the chairman of the Saeima Legal Commission, Andreja Yudin, for the vacant position of the Minister of Justice, LTV reported.

On the other hand, TV3, also referring to unofficial information, emphasized that

Lībiņa-Egnere did not agree to such changes, so it can be concluded that the JV has not yet chosen a new foreign minister.

Politicians have expressed hope that the next foreign minister will be confirmed in office next week. Several names have been mentioned in the political circles as possible candidates for the position of Minister of Foreign Affairs – former parliamentary secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Zanda Kalniņa-Lukaševica (JV), member of the Saeima Ćirts Valdis Kristovskis (JV), ambassador for special tasks of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Baiba Braže, but JV has so far publicly emphasized that it chose not yet done.

As reported, Kariņš announced last Thursday after meeting with Prime Minister Evika Siliņa (JV) that he has decided to resign from the position of Minister of Foreign Affairs. Kariņš leaving the position of Minister of Foreign Affairs on April 10.

For several months now, the scandal regarding the private flights used by the delegations led by Kariņš during his premiership has been relevant in the public space, which has drawn criticism from a part of society.

From 2021 to September 2023, according to the information gathered by the State Chancellery, 613,830 euros were spent on private flights for the business trips of Kariņas and his employees, but together with the part of the costs covered by the European Union, the expenses reach 1.36 million euros.

Recently, the General Prosecutor’s Office has announced that it has started criminal proceedings for the possible waste of funds in connection with the use of charter flights for these business trips.
