LG imagines a connected vegetable patch to stick to its fridge

LG will present at CES 2020 a new product called Column Garden. It is a connected vegetable garden in the form of a built-in column in his kitchen.

For several years now we have been sold indoor connected vegetable gardens, what we call an urban vegetable garden. The promise is the same: you can get a small production of fresh products, herbs, vegetables, aromas, and of course vegetables, without having to go outside and without spending time. Technology automates lighting and watering, all you have to do is use it. Finally, in theory.

LG Electronics has gone a step further with the LG Column Garden, this vegetable garden is a built-in column that will have its place in the kitchen near the fridge or freezer. In addition to light and watering, this vegetable garden also regulates the circulation of air inside. This technology prevents the growth of algae and inhibits unpleasant odors.

A smartphone app helps users manage and monitor their plants, with helpful tips at each step of the process to ensure a successful harvest every time. LG has also provided all-in-one seed packages containing seeds, peat and fertilizer are provided, with 20 different varieties, including lettuce, arugula, chicory and basil.

Silence, it grows (in a machine)

Not sure if this connected vegetable garden is marketed, it looks more like a technological demonstration of LG’s advances. Last year, we discovered a connected micro-brewery for making beer at home.

Personally, I find that there is a lot of technology (and therefore waste) for yields that should not be enough to feed a family, not to mention the energy consumption necessary to run this vegetable garden. The technological demonstration is interesting, but I only see it in a spaceship or on March.
