LG Chem Introduces Special Flame Retardant CFT for High-Temperature Protection in Electric Vehicle Batteries

LG Chem announced on the 27th that it, together with LX Hausys, has developed a battery thermal runaway delay material that can withstand flames at 1,500°C for more than 20 minutes.

The ‘special flame retardant thermoplastic continuous fiber composite material (special flame retardant CFT)’ developed by both companies can withstand strong flames and high pressure for more than 14 times longer than existing composite materials.

According to LG Chem’s own test results, when heat and pressure over 1,500℃ were applied to a 1.6mm thick special flame-retardant CFT, it did not melt, flow, or create holes even after 20 minutes. This is the industry’s highest level of flame blocking performance.

The ‘thermal runaway delay material’ developed by LG Chem last year had the ability to block flames above 1000℃ for over 10 minutes, the longest time in the world at the time. LX Hausys improved blocking performance by using a manufacturing method that stacks LG Chem’s materials in tape form.

Special flame-retardant CFT is hard and has low deformation due to force (high rigidity) and can be used for the top and bottom covers of electric vehicle battery packs. It replaces the steel that previously surrounded the battery. In the event of an electric vehicle fire, the spread of the flame can be effectively delayed, ensuring the time needed to evacuate the driver and extinguish the fire.

Thermal runaway phenomenon has been considered one of the factors slowing down the popularization of electric vehicles. An LG Chem official said, “We have made up for the shortcomings of electric vehicles, where fire spreads quickly.”

Double prevention can be achieved by using a thermal runaway delay material that prevents over 1000℃ in the battery module and the special flame retardant CFT developed this time in the battery pack. The industry expects that LG Chem’s customers, LG Energy Solution and Hyundai Mobis, will receive it and install it in Hyundai Motor Group’s electric vehicles first.
