Lessons from the Accident Experienced by Charly Van Houten and Kru

Jakarta

Charly Van Houten and the Setia Band crew had an accident on the Cipularang Toll Road on July 9, 2022 in the early hours of the morning. Charly’s car was about to overtake the truck, but suddenly the truck took the right lane as well. As a result, accidents are unavoidable.

According to Charly’s confession, the truck did not give any sign of overtaking, so the car he was traveling in dared to overtake. Because the position was too close, the car in which Charly was traveling did not have time to brake, resulting in the collision.

“Suddenly, just as we were about to overtake, the truck suddenly turned to the right without giving a code. So, in the end, it crashed straight away, without applying the brakes,” explained Charly, quoted from detikHot, Sunday (10/7/2022).

Overtaking a vehicle needs to use a technique, according to Charly’s statement, the truck does not give a signal even though this is important to do to give a code to other drivers.

Signals or signs to other motorists can use a turn signal. However, before overtaking, the driver needs to check the mirrors a second time, look back to the rear, after all the steps have been carried out and it feels safe, then the driver is invited to overtake.

“Before passing, make sure to check the mirrors, look briefly to remove the blind spot effect,” said Andry.

“Get ready or move to the right, horn, go ahead,” Andry explained.

Furthermore, Andry explained for overtaking or overtaking that perspective and space are factors that cannot be underestimated, for example when overtaking a large vehicle.

“Limited field of view or obstructed view (could be due to the angle of the road to the vehicle),” said Driving Safety Practitioner, Andry Berlianto some time ago.

“When the view is blocked (undo overtaking other vehicles), it can be due to bend objects or large vehicles, buildings, trees, and others,” added Andry.

Getting to Know Blind Spots on Trucks

Driving safety practitioner from Safety Defensive Consultant Indonesia (SDCI), Sony Susmana said, there are 4 blind spots around the truck where the area is ‘haram’ to be used as a lane for small vehicles.

“Speaking of a whole, the truck has 4 blind spots. That is in the front, rear, exactly the same on the right and left sides. The bigger the truck, the more it needs additional mirrors that look forward, to the side, and so on. This means that the bigger the vehicle, the bigger the blind spot,” said Sony, by telephone to detikOto some time ago.

Citing the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) explanation, the blind spot is in the front of the truck itself or it is about 20 feet or about 6 meters from the front muzzle of the truck.

The second blind spot is directly behind the truck, 30 feet or up to 9 meters behind it. The third blind spot is on the right side of the truck, where the driver is. The position is slightly perpendicular, then diagonally backwards with a slight tilt.

While the fourth blind spot is on the left side of the truck, where the driver cannot see clearly. In essence, the sign when you are driving in a blind spot is that you can’t see the truck driver through the rearview mirror.
