Happy herself lives in an asylum seekers’ center in Friesland and was visiting her friend in Gilze-Rijen. Actually, that woman was the target of the attack. Happy jumped in to protect her friend and her 18-month-old son.

According to chair Sandro Kortekaas of LGBT Asylum Support, the response of the asylum seekers’ center was inadequate on all fronts. Happy would have been left to her fate and a day later had to get back to Groningen by train on her own, after she had been treated for her burns in a Tilburg hospital.
The Central Agency for Asylum Seekers denies this. First aid would have been given immediately and the woman would have left of her own accord, a spokesman said. “We certainly did not abandon the woman.”

Happy has himself a shocking photo of her burns brought out to draw attention to the abuse.
According to Kortekaas, who assists the woman, there is no doubt that the attack stemmed from homophobia. The woman who threw the boiling water, along with her husband Happy, had been bothering about her sexual orientation for some time. This couple, also from Nigeria, spoke openly about their homophobia.
