Leoben Moon Mission: The Most Revolutionary Municipality on a Mission to Reach the Moon

The city of Leoben has applied to be the most revolutionary municipality as part of the “Movement Revolution” and is now starting the “Moon Mission”. Between March and June, kilometers will be collected together with the population in order to cover the 384,400 kilometers to the moon.

LEOBEN. “Leoben, we have a problem,” says spaceship captain Armin Assinger into the receiver. He is stuck on his “course towards the moon”. “I still need 374,000 kilometers. Please, you have to motivate people to exercise.” On the other end of the line, Christopher Seiler, who is currently coaching the girls’ soccer team, can’t believe his ears and thinks the call is a joke. Only gradually does he realize that the fate of the moon mission lies in his hands or those of the people of Leoben. “Get your legs moving, excuses are sold out. Come on!” shouts Seiler, collecting kilometers is the order of the day.

To the moon – and back?

What sounds like the trailer for a new TV production is actually the image video for the Leoben moon mission. As part of the State of Styria’s “Exercise Revolution” project, the city has applied to be the most revolutionary municipality in order to motivate its citizens to exercise more in everyday life and thus contribute to a healthier lifestyle. Under the motto “Leoben on a moon mission”, the aim is to collect enough kilometers by running, cycling, hiking, paddling, walking or various other sports between March and June 2024 to cover the 384,400 kilometer route from the earth to the moon to manage something.

One person who firmly believes in the people of Leoben and believes they can “find their way back” is Regional Councilor Karlheinz Kornhäusl. At a press conference on the “moon mission” on Wednesday, he expressed his enthusiasm: “The ‘movement revolution’ focuses on low-threshold movement in everyday life. Whether it’s walking, cycling, gymnastics, dancing, skiing, swimming, etc.: the different Offers are fun, bring people together and show that regular exercise doesn’t have to be time- or cost-intensive. The Leoben ‘Moon Mission’ reflects this spirit perfectly.”

“Every step counts to promote physical and mental health. Through our efforts, we want to establish a culture of activity that lays the foundation for a healthier, happier life,” adds SPÖ club chairman Hannes Schwarz. The initiative is intended to show that exercise can also be fun.

Collect kilometers together

In cooperation with Leoben sports clubs and trainers, a program booklet was created that offers an overview of the various joint exercise options – from mountain biking with the “Lets Bike” club to tennis at the Schager Tennis Club to paddling on the Mur and senior hikes with Margit Keshmiri . The Wings for life Run, which takes place on May 5th over a 4.5 kilometer long course with start and finish at Montanuniversity, is also ideal for collecting miles and you can even support the moon mission by swimming. The sports pool in the Asia Spa Leoben will be open for free moonlight swimming on March 15th, April 19th and May 17th from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m.

“I would like to call on all Leoben residents to take part in the moon mission in order to work together towards our goal of becoming the most movement-revolutionary community in Styria. Through the playful approach and the fun of it, the topic of exercise should be anchored more firmly in people’s minds in order to give people more healthy years to live. I would like to thank all the clubs, without whose support the implementation of this program would not be possible.”
Kurt Wallner, mayor of the city of Leoben
