Nusantaratv.com – Member of Commission IX DPR RI Rahmad Handoyo reminded that although the monkeypox outbreak has not been confirmed in the country, the government needs to increase vigilance by taking various anticipatory steps.

Like other countries in the world, Indonesia is seen as having to increase vigilance. “So far, monkeypox has not been found in Indonesia. But considering that the cases have spread to 88 countries. This means that monkeypox has reached the terraces of our country. So there is no choice, we must respond by taking anticipatory actions,” said Handoyo in a written statement, Thursday (11/8/2022).

Handoyo said the increase in monkeypox cases, which the World Health Organization (WHO) has declared a global health emergency, was very significant. “Like other countries in the world, Indonesia must increase vigilance, take various anticipatory steps, prevent the spread of monkeypox so that later if it is detected in us it will not spread further,” he continued.

He said cases of monkeypox that hit various countries had increased significantly. It said, when on July 23, 2022, when this disease was declared by WHO as a global health emergency, the number of cases was more than 16,000 people from 75 countries, with deaths.

“From the data we received, a month before the determination, the number of cases was only 3,040 people from 47 countries. Now, on August 6, 2022, it turned out that cases had reached 28,220 and were confirmed by 88 countries. number of targeted countries,” he said.

According to him, there are several urgent anticipatory steps to be taken immediately. Handoyo said that the main thing is that the public must be educated about what and how monkeypox actually is.

“The public must understand the symptoms of the monkeypox outbreak, how it is transmitted and so on. The public must also know when to consult with health workers,” he added.

Adding his statement, Handoyo said, what is no less important is the understanding of health workers about monkeypox. Including increased laboratory detection capabilities.

“The health workers must understand very well what monkeypox is so that later on, he can diagnose it correctly. Maybe it is also necessary to consider so that health workers are given special training about monkeypox,” he explained.

In addition, he continued, epidemiological surveillance need to be encouraged and intensified. “The government through the Ministry of Health can carry out tracing strict isolation and isolation for suspected monkeypox so that it does not spread and can be handled quickly,” he explained.

Furthermore, Handoyo said, to prevent entry to Indonesia and control if detected, it is necessary to think about the availability of this monkeypox vaccine. In addition, he said, as an anticipatory step, the government’s readiness must also be a concern for the government, including the availability of appropriate medicines.

“We have had a bad experience when Covid-19 raged some time ago, hospitals were unable to serve patients. There was also a shortage of medicines. Things like that should not be repeated,” he said.

Handoyo added, to take these anticipatory steps, the government should also establish a multi-sectoral coordination system or mechanism to strengthen all aspects.

“I think by taking these anticipatory steps, we will be better prepared to control the monkeypox epidemic if it is detected in us later. But of course, we still hope that the epidemic does not enter the country,” said the politician from the PDI-P faction.
