Legislative: who are the NUPES candidates in Val-d’Oise?

One month before the legislative elections, the New People’s Ecological and Social Union (NUPES) has invested its ten candidates in Val-d’Oise. Among them, only one outgoing deputy, the ecologist Aurélien Taché, elected under the colors of the presidential majority in 2017.

Seven Insoumis deputies were invested by the NUPES in the Val-d’Oise.

New names for a new union. The first campaign list of NUPES candidates, which brings together the various left-wing parties, gives pride of place to France Insoumise. In June, there will be seven of Jean-Luc Mélenchon’s party to run for the constituencies of Val-d’Oise. If Leïla Ivorra, Karine Lacouture, Gabrielle Cathala, Carlos Martens Bilongo and Arnaud Le Gall are all invested for the first time, this is not the case for Sylvie Geoffroy-Martin and Paul Vannier. The first, candidate in the second constituency five years ago where she finished behind Axel Poniatowski (LR) and Guillaume Vuilletet (LREM), will defend France Insoumise again in June. The second, regional councilor for Ile-de-France since 2021, was invested by his party in the 18th district of Paris for the legislative elections in 2017, before being preceded by Myriam El Khomri (PS) and Pierre-Yves Bournazel (LR).

The ecologist deputy Aurélien Taché (ex-LREM) will again be a candidate for the 10th constituency.

“The number of constituencies we obtained reflects the mobilization for Jean-Luc Mélenchon in the first round of the presidential election”appreciates Pamela Hocini, LFI 95 departmental secretary. 39.91% to 62.06%.

The candidacy of Aurélien Taché (ex-LREM) contested

On the 3rd, 7th, and 10th constituencies, the NUPES relied on a socialist candidacy and two from the environmental pole, which brings together Europe-Ecology-The Greens, Generation Ecology, Generation.s, and The New Democrats. Contrary to the presidential majority which renewed six of its eight deputies elected five years ago, the union of the left was only able to invest one outgoing deputy in Val-d’Oise. Irony of fate: it is not the former socialist François Pupponi, but Aurélien Taché, elected under the label of the Republic in March in 2017, and today environmentalist candidate for his own succession in the 10th constituency. The presence of the co-chair of the New Democrats is not unanimous: « He voted and supported all the measures that the PS is fighting such as the reduction of APL, the increase of the CSG for retirees, the abolition of the ISF. I call to beat him”says the senator (PS) of the department Rachid Temal, who believes that the agreement has sacrificed the socialists.

Left-wing political formations such as the collective “ Cergy Demain” led by Sanaa Saitouli, the association “Pontoise à Gauche Vraiment” or the Federation of the Republican Left which invested Augustin Belloc intend to block Aurélien Taché. The latter, who made his decision to leave LREM between September 2019 and March 2020, defends himself to have been elected under a label, “but under a program”. Now opposed to Emmanuel Macron’s policy on climate and social issues, he defends his new position: ” And I was opportunistic, I would have stayed at LREM, I was rather pampered there. However, I left two years ago when the left was at the bottom of the hole ».

The investiture of Carine Pelegrin (Génération Ecologie) in the 3rd district of Val-d’Oise completes the picture for the environmental pole.

Romain Eskenazi (PS): “I am not isolated”

Alternate in 2017, the socialist Romain Eskenazi will be this year holder in the 7th constituency.

Regarding the Socialist Party, Romain Eskenazi is the only one to have been saved for the legislative elections, out of the eight candidates unveiled in February by his party. The municipal councilor (PS) in Montmorency, substitute for Rita Maalouf (7.95% in the first round) in 2017 is invested in the 7th district, where he will challenge the outgoing deputy (LREM) Dominique Da Silva. Five years later, he hopes to make a difference in local fights missed by the majority according to him: « Mr. Da Silva was particularly absent on the territory, whether for the service by public transport, the closing of post offices, the fight against air pollution. In the National Assembly, he voted for everything the Government asked of him ». Romain Eskenazi concedes having had a “ambivalent feeling, especially for his comrades not retained in the other constituencies” at the time of learning of his investiture, but affirms not to be intimidated by being the only candidate of the PS: « I feel supported by the left-wing mayors of the territory, in Bouffémont, Écouen, and Sarcelles. I am not isolated ».

A poor relation under the banner of NUPES, the French Communist Party has inherited no incumbent candidate in the Val-d’Oise. All its leaders withdrew in favor of the union. The federal secretary of the PCF 95 Cécile Dumas wants to be optimistic: « This agreement will allow us to have a communist group in the National Assembly, made stronger with the NUPES. If the campaign is collective, then ridings like 5th, 8th, and 9th will be winnable ».
