Olympic champion in basketball in 1972 as part of the USSR national team Alzhan Zharmukhamedov died at the age of 78. Speaking of which reported on the CSKA website.

“Today, after a long illness, the great player of CSKA and the national team of our country, Alzhan Zharmukhamedov passed away. The legendary Serpent of Turkestan was 78 years old,” the message said.

Zharmukhamedov was born in Tajikistan and in the initial stage of his career defended the colors of the Tashkent army club. He moved to Moscow in 1969 and played for CSKA for 11 seasons. With the team he won the European Champions Cup (1971) and 10 USSR titles.

As part of the USSR national team, Zharmukhamedov won gold at the 1972 Olympic Games and bronze at the 1976 Olympic Games, three titles at the European Championships (1967, 1971, 1979), silver (1978) and bronze (1970) of the world champions.

In 2012, CSKA held a ceremony in honor of Zharmukhamedov, during which a symbolic jersey with his number was raised under the arches of USC CSKA.
