Legendary July morning singer John Lawton has died. The sad news was announced on the official website of Uriah Heep. The 74-year-old singer passed away on June 29.

Lawton became popular in Bulgaria with the song “July morning”, which ritually welcomes the sunrise on July 1 on the beach. He and his wife Iris lived in Kavarna. In 2017, however, they sold their apartment. The musician was friends with the former mayor of Kavarna Tsonko Tsonev.

Lawton was a great friend of Bulgaria, he liked the nature, history and culture of our country. Participates in a number of Bulgarian films, shows and cultural initiatives.

In 2011 Lawton participated in the popular Bulgarian film, produced by NOVA – Love.net, and in addition to his participation, he also contributed with the song “Tonight”, which is included in the soundtrack to the film.

In January 2012 he recorded an album with “Diana Express”.

John Lawton was born on July 11, 1946 in Halifax, England. He began his musical career at the North Shields in the early 1960s with The Deans. He then joined West One and later Stonewall, starring John Miles, Vic Malcolm and Paul Thompson. In 1969 he moved to West Germany, where he was offered a job as a singer in the cult German rock band Lucifer’s Friend, with whom he recorded 9 studio albums. In 1976 he joined the band Uriah Heep, with whom he recorded the albums “Innocent Victim”, “Firefly”, “Fallen Angel” and “Live ’79” and for 4 years performed in Europe and the United States.

Throughout his long career, John has worked with some of the biggest names in rock. Lawton formed the band GunHill, renamed the JLB’s John Lawton Band in 1994, with which he toured the United Kingdom and Europe. In May 2006, John and Dutch guitarist Jean Dumas (formerly of Focus) created OTR (On The Rocks). Their new album “Mamonama” was released in October 2008.
