Lecture series “DenkArt” is dedicated to the current challenges of social cohesion

In the Haus am Dom, the participatory lecture series “DenkArt” will be continued this spring, by Prof. Marion Tiedtke (professor for drama at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Frankfurt am Main and dramaturge), Prof. Joachim Valentin (director of the Catholic Akademie Rabanus Maurus, Haus am Dom Frankfurt), Rebecca Caroline Schmidt (managing director of the research association “Normative Regulations” of the Goethe University Frankfurt am Main) and Mechtild M. Jansen (board member of the Heinrich Böll Foundation Hessen). The second cycle in the series will be devoted to the topic of “solidarity” from March.

In times of Corona, we need social cohesion more than ever. In this crisis situation everyone is asked to take responsibility for others as well, everyone has to participate if it is a matter of bearing the economic consequences together. For some time now, however, a development has emerged in our society that is dividing our public into partial interest groups. Parallel worlds open up, bubbles in which we establish ourselves and at the same time demarcate. Be it questions of religion, origin, social position, political stance or one’s own lifestyle: society is diverse and in this diversity threatens to disintegrate as a community. What else connects us when fake news no longer allows truth, when values have become disputed, when opinions count instead of arguments, when the social divides us more and more? Only with solidarity will we cope with the tasks of the future, and only with solidarity can democratic rights be protected. But how is solidarity still possible today?

On March 9th at 7.30pm, the author and blogger Kübra Gümüşay will open the series with the lecture “Solidarity – How is participation possible for everyone?”. Subsequently, on May 4th, the author and Büchner Prize winner Lukas Bärfuss will speak on the question “Solidarity_How can an old value be rethought?”. At the end of the series, on June 8th, Prof. Sighard Neckel, sociologist at the University of Hamburg and associated member of the research association “Normative Orders”, will give a lecture on the question “Solidarity_What role do emotions, rules, infrastructures?

The aim of the series is to cultivate the public culture of debate and to enable a participatory space for discourse on contemporary social issues. Therefore, following the keynote speeches, the audience will be brought into conversation with each other and will have the opportunity to discuss the presentations among themselves and to develop questions for the guest speakers in small groups. Since it is expected that only a few places can be allocated in the Haus am Dom, the event will be broadcast via live streaming www.youtube.com/hausamdom supplemented or replaced if necessary. This is intended to offer other listeners the opportunity to participate in the discussion on the respective keynote speech via a chat.

The organizers are the Catholic Academy Rabanus Maurus, Haus am Dom, the research association “Normative Regulations” of the Goethe University Frankfurt am Main, the Heinrich Böll Foundation Hessen eV and Prof. Marion Tiedtke (professor for drama at the University of Music and Performing Arts) Art in Frankfurt am Main and dramaturge). The series is supported by the Sebastian Cobler Foundation for Civil Rights.
