Lebanese Army Arrests Al-Qaeda Leader Linked to Fatah al-Islam

On Saturday, the Lebanese army announced the arrest of an al-Qaeda member in the town of Deir Ammar, in the north statement He described him as “one of the most prominent leaders of Al-Qaeda, and the founders of its cells in Lebanon.”

The statement also stated that the detainee, who was arrested on Friday, had “a leading role in establishing the terrorist organization Fatah al-Islam.”

According to the army, the person whom the statement symbolized with his initials (T.M.) was closely associated with Al-Qaeda, before he disappeared from view in 2008, then reappeared after the emergence of ISIS and the Al-Nusra Front.

The arrested person was linked to terrorist groups operating in northern Lebanon, “and he worked to shelter one of their most dangerous leaders,” according to the Lebanese army statement.

The army pointed out that the arrested was active among the groups that united to fight the Lebanese army in the neighborhoods of the city of Tripoli and the town of Hanin.

The brief statement indicated that investigations with the arrested person are still ongoing under the supervision of the competent judiciary.
