Learn about the characteristics of the CanSino vaccine

In the coming months, the Government of Ecuador will acquire six million doses of CanSino vaccines, developed by the pharmaceutical company CanSino Biologics, the Beijing Institute of Biotechnology, and the National Research Council of Canada (NRC).

This Chinese vaccine is of a single application and, according to the studies carried out by the manufacturer house, it has shown an efficacy of 65.28%, 28 days after its application. The studies were carried out in countries like Mexico where it has already been applied to teachers.

In a statement, CanSino Biologics reported that the efficacy in that country is 65% for symptomatic cases, and 90% for moderate and severe cases.

Loreto Twele, doctor and academic at the Faculty of Medicine and Science of the University of San Sebastián, assures that this vaccine is a viral vector, that is, it uses an adenovirus that is inactivated that does not have the ability to infect.

Inside this adenovirus, genetic material of the Spike (S) protein of the SARS Cov-2 coronavirus, which causes covid-19, is placed, so that the body identifies the virus and generates antibodies.

Experts point out that the vaccine induces an immune response, generating specific neutralizing antibodies, after 14 days after vaccination, with a maximum peak on day 28.

So far there have been side effects of the vaccine such as pain, redness, swelling and itching at the application site and, less frequently, bleeding at the injection site. According to studies, these symptoms are not serious and disappear in the short term.

Among the most serious reactions are: fever, myalgia, fatigue, headache, nausea, diarrhea, arthralgia, cough, vomiting, decreased appetite and dizziness.

The vaccine does not need deep freezing, as it is viable as long as it is kept refrigerated at temperatures between 2 and 8 degrees Celsius.

Currently in the country, Pfizer brand vaccines are applied, whose general efficacy is 95% and requires two doses of application.

The AstraZeneca vaccine is also used, which has shown 70% efficacy, and Sinovac, with 50%.
