Leaked Images Show Redesigned Camera Bump on Google Pixel Fold 2 Prototype

Google is set to join the “prominent camera bump” trend with its upcoming Pixel Fold 2, as leaked images of an early prototype reveal a redesigned camera bump. The leaked renders of the Pixel 9 series also hint at this new design feature.

According to reports, the Pixel Fold 2 will skip a processor generation and instead use the yet-to-be-announced Tensor G4 chip. This will be paired with up to 16 GB of RAM, which is a first for Pixel phones.

Android Authority has provided the first look at what is believed to be the Pixel Fold 2 for this year. The most striking detail is the overhauled camera bump, which replaces the bar design of the previous model with a rounded rectangle that protrudes from the top-left corner. This design bears a strong resemblance to the camera array seen in the initial leaks of the Pixel 9 series.

The camera sensors on the Pixel Fold 2 appear to be similar to those on the first-generation foldable, but rearranged. However, it is worth noting that the temperature sensor found in the Pixel 8 Pro, which is set to return with the Pixel 9 Pro, is still absent on Google’s second foldable.

The original Pixel Fold had a unique small and super-wide form factor among foldable phones. However, Google seems to be taking a different approach with the sequel. The Pixel Fold 2 is expected to have a much taller aspect ratio that resembles the OnePlus Open. According to sources, it will be “closer to a square” in shape.

Another noticeable change is the hinge, which bears a striking resemblance to the one used by OnePlus. However, Google’s form factor has extremely rounded corners compared to the more squared-off designs of OnePlus and Samsung.

It is important to note that since this device is still in the prototype phase, not all visible details can be confirmed. However, the use of matte materials for the Pixel Fold 2 hinge, as opposed to the polished metal of the first Fold, helps to conceal the hinge when the phone is unfolded.

Following the pattern of last year’s Pixel Fold launch, it is expected that the Pixel Fold 2 will be released in the summer, possibly being unveiled at Google I/O 2024. The reported use of the Tensor G4 chip, along with design details seen in the Pixel 9 series, suggests that the Pixel Fold 2 may be part of this fall’s Made by Google lineup.
