Leaked CAD-based Renders Reveal Google Pixel Fold 2 with Controversial Camera Design

In a surprising turn of events, leaked CAD-based renders of the highly anticipated Google Pixel Fold 2 have surfaced, showcasing a rather unconventional camera design. The initial glimpse of the device left many perplexed, as it featured a rounded rectangle island on the back, replacing the traditional camera visor. The island housed two oval-shaped areas stacked on top of each other, housing the cameras themselves.

At first glance, the design appeared unfinished, resembling more of a prototype than a final product. However, it seems that Google is indeed moving forward with this controversial design choice. The leaked renders confirm that the Pixel Fold 2 will indeed feature the peculiar camera island, which has garnered mixed reactions from tech enthusiasts.

The Charcoal color version of the Pixel Fold 2 is showcased in the leaked renders. While the camera design has raised eyebrows, it is worth noting that the device boasts several notable improvements over its predecessor. The inner screen now incorporates an under-display selfie camera in the top right corner, allowing for significantly smaller bezels compared to the original Pixel Fold. Additionally, the outer screen has been enlarged to 6.4 inches (or 6.6 inches when factoring in the corners), providing users with a more immersive viewing experience. The outer screen also features a centered hole-punch for the selfie camera.

When unfolded, the Pixel Fold 2 measures 155.2 x 150.2 x 5.27 mm, making it noticeably squarer than its predecessor, aligning with previous rumors. Furthermore, it is marginally thinner, which adds to its sleek and modern aesthetic. In its folded state, the dimensions shrink to 155.2 x 77.1 x 10.54 mm, surpassing even the rumored thickness of the Galaxy Z Fold6.

The lower frame of the device houses the USB-C port, speaker grille, and SIM tray, while the power and volume buttons are conveniently located on the right side. Additionally, a secondary speaker grille is positioned at the top, accompanied by an antenna line cut into the metal frame.

Rumors surrounding the Pixel Fold 2 suggest that it may be equipped with the Tensor G4 chipset, potentially delaying its launch until October. This would coincide with the release of the Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro. Furthermore, the device is expected to boast an impressive 16GB of RAM, setting a new record for Google, along with UFS 4.0 storage.

While the leaked renders have sparked debate among tech enthusiasts, it is important to remember that these images are based on CAD designs and may not fully represent the final product. As with any leaks, it is advisable to take them with a grain of salt until official announcements are made by Google.

As the launch date approaches, anticipation continues to build for the Google Pixel Fold 2. Whether the controversial camera design will be a hit or miss remains to be seen, but one thing is for certain – Google is pushing boundaries and challenging conventional smartphone aesthetics with its latest foldable device.
