One of the leaders of the Italian anti-vaccines Luigi Marili died at the age of 64 from COVID-19 in a hospital in Perugia, local media reported.

News of his death was spread on Facebook by the social movement “Liberate Italy”, which unites many opponents of vaccination.

According to Corriere della Sera, one of the anti-waxer’s close friends, entrepreneur Marino Reciuti, in whose company Marili worked, wrote directly on social media that he had died of COVID-19.

My real friend, whom I have known for more than 15 years, who worked with me and who could have been saved if he did not follow your ideology, instead of listening to the advice of his family and friends, has died. You should all be ashamed to even say his name, Rekuti wrote in a comment that was later deleted.

The story was covered by many Italian media outlets, sparking a backlash from the “Liberate Italy” movement, which issued a special statement on its website urging the press to stop “media looting” over Marili’s death and threatening to sue.

At the same time, the communication emphasizes that “vaccinated and unvaccinated are infected and get sick in the same way.”
