Lavrov: Moscow should stop talking to the EU for a while

According to the AP agency, he reacted to the sanctions that the 27-year-old wants to impose against a group of Russian citizens in connection with the poisoning of the opposition politician Alexei Navalny.

“Perhaps we should simply stop talking for a while to those who are responsible for foreign policy in the West and who do not understand the need for a mutually respectful dialogue,” Lavrov told a foreign policy conference in Moscow on Tuesday.

He mentioned the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, who had recently warned against establishing closer relations with Russia. “Be that as they may,” the Russian foreign minister, according to TASS, added.

EU states on Monday agreed to impose sanctions on a group of Russian citizens, including Russian secret service personnel, in connection with the poisoning of a Russian opposition leader. The foreign ministers supported the proposal of Germany and France, which envisages the punishment of a group of people responsible for the use of the nervous paralytic substance novice. According to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), Navalny was poisoned in Russia in August. A specific list of names should be prepared by EU diplomacy in the coming days, and states could finally approve it later this week.

Moscow says it has nothing to do with the poisoning, but has not yet responded to the EU’s calls for cooperation in the investigation.
