About 80 health professionals led an action on Saturday afternoon in Lausanne. From the medical branch of Extinction Rebellion (Doctors for XR), they played a theatrical play to alert passers-by to the repercussions of global warming.
Mostly dressed in white coats, wearing masks with the symbol of XR, health professionals met at 2 p.m. on the Place de l’Europe. While two speakers narrated the disasters to come in connection with the climate crisis, the activists took turns laying on the asphalt to form the XR logo.
“Humans cannot survive at certain temperatures. Regions of the world will become uninhabitable, ”said one of the demonstrators. As accessories, the militants carried a coffin with the inscription “Our future” and a giant thermometer. Among the banners, one could read in particular “The government’s inaction kills”.
Former cantonal doctor of the party
The demonstration, authorized by the police, brought together activists of all ages from various health sectors. Among them was Jean Martin, the former Vaud cantonal doctor (1986-2003). “Climate change will have devastating effects, much greater for example than what we are experiencing with the Covid-19,” he said, interviewed by Keystone-ATS.
The former radical MP considered it difficult to “sensitize the public authorities” on this problem, which is why he joined the climate marches last year and then the Extinction Rebellion movement. “I believe in the democratic system, but the political process is slow. There is a place for civil disobedience in view of the emergency, “he said.
Jean Martin nevertheless welcomed recent advances in the field, in particular the CO2 law validated by the Federal Parliament. “It is a significant step in the right direction,” he said.
