A common project between the USA and the European Union

  • The United States and Europe agree on a great project! After the adoption of a recovery plan of 1900 billion dollars by the American Congress and the vote of a budget of 1800 billion by the European Union to “rebuild post-Covid-19 Europe”, place to a first concrete project. The Biden administration and the European Commission have announced the start of a large-scale project: the construction of a tunnel under the Atlantic to link Paris to New York by train.
  • “The tunnel will make it possible to directly link the two largest metropolises in the world, opening up new prospects for trade between Europe and North America”, writes the European Union in its press release. “This ambitious project recalls the heyday of the New Deal policy launched by President Franklin Roosevelt in 1933”, proclaims for its part the Democratic administration of Joe Biden.

What will the tunnel under the Atlantic consist of?

  • Concretely, the two-way tunnel will start from the outskirts of Le Conquet, at the tip of Brittany, to end on Long Island, nearly 5,400 km away. On the European side, the site will benefit from the expertise of construction companies that participated in Transmanche Link, the consortium that brought together the companies that built the Channel Tunnel. On the American side, the site will mark the debut of Hyperloop, the rapid transport capsules developed by Elon Musk’s company.
  • The first shuttles should start in 2024, on time for the opening of the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. Trains will run at a maximum speed of 1,102 km / h, putting Paris at a 7-hour journey from New York. The duration of the train journey will remain close to the duration of a transatlantic flight but with a major difference: the journey will be from center to center, from Gare du Nord to Grand Central Terminal station, in the heart of New York. . Goodbye airport transfers and the endless wait for luggage delivery!
  • Another dimension not to be overlooked: the price. The European Commission specifies that the price of the round trip will not exceed one hundred euros, or less than € 50 per trip. The Atlantic tunnel should make it possible to give a new dimension to exchanges between Europe and America. “The future of relations between Europe and America is written under the Atlantic”, enthusiastic Joe Biden, in his press release.
