Latvian Voices: Summer Master Classes and A Cappella Music Festival in Valmiera

Latvian Voices

17-19 of this year. In August, the vocal group Latvian Voices will sing in Valmiera with summer master classes and the seventh a cappella music festival. The festival gathers ensemble singers, musicians, educators, individual enthusiasts and a cappella music lovers every year.

As usual, the master classes will be led by members of Latvian Voices, paying special attention to topics such as creativity, rehearsal and singing process, stage freedom, vocal health, mutual harmony of body, mind and voice. Special emphasis will be placed on the male voice. Also, all guest artists and guest speakers of the festival this year are owners of male voices: musician and singer Shipsea; breath and voice coach Arturas Burke; singers from the vocal groups Midnight Five (Latvia) and ManSound (Ukraine), who will share their professional perspective and personal experience in ensemble singing.

Several vocal music concerts will be held within the festival:
On August 17, at 7:00 p.m., the festival will be opened by the multifaceted creative personality Shipsea with a solo performance in the church of St. Simon in Valmiera. He has worked in countless genre-diverse projects, including being a member of the vocal group Cosmos. Shipsea’s unique voice timbre and range, combined with his characteristic, experimental style of original music, is able to move listeners both in Latvia and abroad.

On August 18, the traditional A Cappella Night will be opened by the Midnight Five vocal group with an open-air concert “Acoustics” in the yard at 20:00. Five young, professional musicians sing in the group – graduates of the Riga Dome Choir School – who continue their education in performing arts, and have already closely intertwined their life path with the music of choirs and vocal ensembles. The group’s repertoire includes both jazz and pop music
folklore as well as other unnamed styles. In the continuation of the evening, DJ Straume will take care of a cappella moods.

On August 19, the Closing concert of the festival will begin in two parts at 18:00 at the Valmiera Culture Center. In the first part, the organizers of the festival – Latvian Voices – and all the participants of this year’s master classes will take the stage. In the second part of the concert, the group Mansound from Ukraine will perform. The vocal sextet was founded in Kyiv in 1994, and in 2001 at the All American Entertainment Awards ceremony
ManSound were nominated for Best Vocal Group. Despite the conditions of the war, the group has not stopped its stage activities, thus drawing the world’s attention to what is happening in Ukraine.

Latvian Voices is one of only a few professional a cappella groups in the Baltics. Taking into account the little-known nature of this music genre, Latvian Voices, in cooperation with the city of Valmiera, have set the goal of introducing listeners to the diversity and current events of a cappella music in the world every summer, providing high-quality concerts of domestic artists and foreign groups, as well as organizing
inspiring master classes for a cappella practitioners. The festival takes place in various charming locations of Valmiera, revealing the magic of this region and the summer season.
