From 13 to 23 October the Rome Film Fest took place in Rome, the international film festival in Rome, in the main competition including 16 films from France, Spain, USA, Italy, Switzerland, Belgium, Germany Viesturs Kairis’ the new feature film “January” was selected, which tells the feelings of a young man in Latvia during the barricades in January 1991.

The jury awarded the film the three most important prizes: the best film, the best direction (to Viestur Kairis), the best actor (the Vittorio Gasman award to Karl Arnold Avota). The closing ceremony of the Warsaw International Film Festival was also held on Saturday 22 October, where the film “January” was included in the main program of the competition as a European premiere.

The jury prize of the competition for best director was awarded to director Viesturas Kairis, the prize was received in person by the Polish co-producers of the film (it is a co-production of Latvia, Lithuania and Poland). There, in the Warsaw Film Festival competition “Competition 1-2”, which evaluates the first and second films of the directors, the debut film by director Linda Olte, Latvian and Italian co-production “Māsas” was selected as the best film. of this competition and was also awarded by the international association of film critics FIPRESCI as the best debut in Eastern Europe.

The third film to be recognized in Europe this weekend is the Latvian-Polish co-produced short film “Coincidences”, a self-animated film for adults by Polish director Marta Magnuška, made in collaboration between one of the most active Polish studios “Animoon” and the internationally renowned Latvian studio “Atom Art”. .
