Latvia has dropped to 23rd place in Europe in the prevalence of Covid-19

Due to the deteriorating epidemiological situation in most European countries, Latvia has dropped to 23rd place in the past two weeks among the European Union (EU) and European Economic Area (EEA) countries with the highest infection rates with Covid-19, according to the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control ( Data collected by the ECDC).


Last week, Latvia was in the 22nd place, a week before – in the 16th place, but in the middle of June, Latvia even had the highest incidence of Covid-19 in the EU.

ECDC estimates of the situation in the previous two weeks from 12 to 25 July show that the cumulative morbidity per 100,000 population in Latvia has risen to 30.5 cases, but it is still lower than in most EU and EEA countries.

The highest incidence rates in the EU and EEA are currently in Cyprus, with 1,514 cases per 100,000 population, followed by Spain with almost 800 cases and the Netherlands with more than 600 cases. The lowest incidence rate is in Poland with 3.6 cases per 100,000 population.

The average incidence rate in the EU and EEA countries is currently 200.4 cases per 100,000 population.

In Estonia, the infection rate has risen to 76.5 cases per 100,000 population in the last two weeks, and to 70.9 cases in Lithuania, according to ECDC data.

In Latvia, the 14-day mortality rate with a diagnosis of Covid-19 has dropped to 6.8 cases per million population at the end of last week. However, we are still among the five EU and EEA countries with the highest mortality rates.

Only Cyprus, Portugal, Greece and Bulgaria have had higher mortality rates of Covid-19 diagnosis per million population in the past two weeks.

The corresponding figure is 3.58 in Lithuania and 0.75 in Estonia.

Latvia is also still in the green area of ​​the ECDC travel alert card, which indicates to travelers a low risk of Covid-19. Estonia, on the other hand, has entered the orange zone, but all the necessary data on Lithuanian map makers is missing.

The Green Zone currently covers about half of the EU and EEA territory.

Cyprus, as well as most regions in Spain, the Netherlands, as well as some Greek and French islands, are currently in a dark red area, which indicates a high risk for travelers.

The red zone covers Portugal, Malta, Ireland, the rest of Spain and the Netherlands, as well as Greece, Belgium, France, Italy and Denmark. The orange zone is located in Estonia, Iceland, a number of regions in Greece, Belgium, Croatia, France, Italy, Austria, Denmark, the Czech Republic, Sweden and Finland.
