Latest Updates on Ukraine Conflict: Minor Successes for Ukrainian Forces, Lithuania Closes Border Posts

NU.nl regularly gives you an overview of the situation in Ukraine. This time, Ukraine claims that the armed forces are achieving minor successes. NATO member state Lithuania has meanwhile closed two border posts with Belarus, fearing a possible attack by the Wagner mercenary army.

Ukrainian Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Maliar reported Wednesday that Uroshaine is liberated. The village is located in the eastern Donetsk region. There has been heavy fighting around the village in recent days.

Maliar wrote that the Ukrainian troops have reached the outskirts of the village. “The offensive continues.”

Before the war, Urozhine had about a thousand inhabitants. Ukraine also previously reported to have liberated nearby Staromaiorske.

Ukraine would also advance again near Bakhmut. That city fell into Russian hands earlier this year after months of fighting and is largely in ruins.

Strategic rail hub on the verge of falling

The offensive of the Ukrainians is not going well everywhere. For example, the armed forces are having a hard time around the northern city of Kupyansk, in Kharkiv. The city is an important hub for railway lines, among other things.

The Russians are trying with all their might to get through the defensive line of the Ukrainian troops. “Every day they get a little further. They come from all sides,” says an air force commander CNN.

Due to rising tensions around Kupyansk, the last inhabitants of the city and the surrounding area were evacuated last week.

Attack on harbor on the Danube

The Russians also continue to carry out attacks on targets in Ukraine. The Ukrainian authorities say that the port of Reni has been bombarded with drones. That city is located on the river Danube, near the border with neighboring Romania.

The port is important for grain transport across the Black Sea. A large cargo ship that has been lying idle since the start of the war in Ukraine is now sailing the Black Sea for the first time. The ship uses a so-called humanitarian corridor, a temporary route for stranded ships.

Lithuania closes border posts with Belarus

In addition to Romania, fellow NATO member Lithuania also notices that the battle is not far from their national borders. The country will close two of its six border crossings to Russia’s ally Belarus on Friday.

Lithuania is tightening border security due to the presence of the Wagner mercenary army in Belarus. The Lithuanian government fears that the mercenaries are crossing the border illegally by posing as migrants.
