Update 08:49 – Defense wants to take over personnel from KLM and IHC

Defense is in consultation with KLM and Royal IHC, among others, to take over surplus personnel. The armed forces have been struggling with a great shortage of personnel for years. There are more than 9,000 vacancies.

A spokesperson for the department confirms reports from De Telegraaf about this. Defense has a great shortage of technical personnel, among other things. Discussions are taking place with more companies and trade associations.

Defense has been in talks with the business community about forms of cooperation for some time. “Covid has accelerated it all,” said the spokesman. The spokesman cannot say how many people the ministry hopes to take over from KLM and IHC.

Update 07:38 – ‘Corona test kit producer avoided taxes for millions’

Corona test kit manufacturer Qiagen has avoided millions of euros in tax since 2010 thanks to constructions in Ireland, Luxembourg and Malta. In the meantime, the biotech giant, with its paper headquarters in Venlo, has received large-scale public funding. This is reported by the Research Foundation for Multinational Enterprises (SOMO) after investigation.

SOMO examined the company’s annual accounts, which would show how the company avoids tax on profits. “The company has set up a network of letterbox companies in European tax havens Ireland, Luxembourg and Malta in order to avoid tax through internal loans.”

The researchers estimate that Qiagen has evaded $ 93 million in tax since 2010 and accrued a tax deduction of $ 49 million. SOMO indicates that this is a conservative estimate, because not all potential avoidance structures have been investigated.

Update 03:30 – Cabinet comes with more clarity about mouth masks advice

On Friday afternoon, the cabinet will announce the exact details of the “urgent advice” for masks in public indoor spaces on the website of the national government. This aims to remove any uncertainty about the advice.

It is expected that these details will be shared with the Prime Minister before 6 p.m., possibly after the weekly press conference. Deputy Prime Minister Kajsa Ollongren will give that press conference this Friday, because Rutte is in Brussels for an extra EU summit. She also heads the Council of Ministers this week. It is the first time that she has replaced Rutte since she returned from sick leave this spring. Before that, she did it twice before, in 2018.

Last Wednesday, Prime Minister Mark Rutte announced that the advice immediately applies to the whole country, to all places “where you cannot see the sky”. The prime minister mentioned, among other things, shops, museums, airports, parking garages and petrol stations.

He acknowledged that this advice could raise many questions. For example, at stations there is a recommendation to wear mouth masks, while they are mandatory on the train. It is also recommended to wear them when visiting cafes, theaters or restaurants, but they are no longer needed once someone sits down. After all, chairs or stools can be placed 1.5 meters apart.
