Leipzig reached the semi-finals of the Champions League somewhat surprisingly. The Germans defeat Atlético Madrid 2-1 at the final tournament in Lisbon.
Substitute American Tyler Adams scored the winning goal after 87 minutes with a lucky punch, a deflected long shot. The goal fell when Atlético had finally started to dominate and Leipzig could barely breathe. Leipzig, the third in the last Bundesliga season, will compete against Paris Saint-Germain in the semifinals next Tuesday. Before Leipzig ten years ago, Schalke was the last German semi-finalist in the Champions League who was not called Bayern Munich or Borussia Dortmund.
Leipzig’s 1-0 after 51 minutes was scored by Dani Olmo with a header on a cross from Leipzig’s Austrian key player Marcel Sabitzer. Olmo, whom Leipzig signed from Dinamo Zagreb last winter, scored as a Catalan against a Madrid team. It was astonishing that the Spaniards could hardly dominate and develop pressure after falling behind. To equalize after 71 minutes, they needed a rightly imposed foul penalty, which substitute Portuguese João Felix took out and used. Only afterwards did Atlético show their superiority – probably thanks to the higher value of the substitutes.
The first half had practically no highlights. In the first dangerous scene after four minutes, Leipzig defender Marcel Halstenberg hit the ball with a direct decrease over the goal after a badly defended corner. On the other hand, Leipzig’s strong goalie Peter Gulacsi fought off Atlético’s Belgian Yannick Carrasco with a brilliant save.
The fact that the Spaniards did not get into the penalty area dangerously for a long time was due to the fact that the Leipzigers played for an hour like a team that has long known the business in the premier class. Nevertheless, the newly rich East Germans have reached the knockout phase of the Champions League for the first time in their only third European Cup participation.
At Atlético, despite the elimination, it should be taken into account that the season began with a considerable upheaval in the squad, in which not only the departure of the top striker Antoine Griezmann was significant. But the undisputed coach Simeone did not need much time to put together a team that is as strong as the formation in the prime, when Atlético twice reached the Champions League final (defeats against Real Madrid). The appearances in the round of 16, in which Atlético despaired defending champions Liverpool and eliminated them, are eloquent testimony to the new strength with a defensive basic orientation.
