Large Fire in Agricultural Company Warehouse; Fire Brigade Unable to Enter – No Immediate Danger to Surrounding Area

A large fire is raging in a warehouse of agricultural company De Groene Agri just outside the village of Rutten, in the Noordoostpolder. No one was injured. Local residents and employees are accommodated in an adjacent church. Fire brigades from all over the region have been deployed.

This concerns a refrigerated storage facility of several thousand square meters. There are many solar panels on the roof. The fire brigade says that the wind is favorable and that there is no immediate danger to the surrounding area.

Fire brigade cannot enter
Due to the heavy smoke development, firefighters cannot enter and extinguish the fire from aerial platforms. “Given the complexity of the building, the fire load inside and the heavy smoke development, we do not want to expose our people to this. We do not think that is safe,” said Geertjan Veenstra of the fire brigade.

In addition, the building is made of steel, which is extra dangerous. “Steel softens at a few hundred degrees and that can then collapse and that is also a reason why we don’t go inside. Because with steel we never know when it has reached the point where it breaks.” way close
The fire broke out around 8 a.m. on Gemaalweg, between Rutten and Lemmer. That road has been closed to give emergency services space to extinguish the fire.

Carrots and chicory would be stored in the warehouse, among other things. Around 10 a.m. the fire brigade reports that smoke development is increasing. Residents of Rutten do not yet have to close their windows and doors. “When the smoke heads towards the center of Rutten, we will be the first to inform those people, but there is no reason to do so at the moment.”
