A large fire rages in a pigsty in Lierop (North Brabant). The fire brigade suspects that there are about a thousand pigs in the stable.
The animals are unlikely to survive. The burning stable is considered to be lost, the fire brigade says “to make efforts to keep an adjacent stable”. Chances are that this will work, writes the fire brigade on Twitter.
The number of stable fires has been increasing for years. Research by the Investico platform found that over a million animals died in these fires in the past eight years.
The fires are most common in so-called mega stables, with more than 7,500 pigs or 120,000 chickens.
