Langan is saved from administration

The famous 1980s celebrity haunts Langan Brewery, once frequented by famous faces including Rod Stewart, has reportedly been rescued from administration.

The London restaurant, which opened in 1976 under then-co-owners Michael Caine and restaurateur Peter Langan, is set to restart next fall.

The Mayfair restaurant, a favorite of boxer Muhammad Ali and Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger, was reportedly acquired by a group of individuals led by Oakley Capital founder Peter Dubens.

It had closed in March following the coronavirus outbreak and has not reopened following the relaxation of coronavirus restrictions earlier this year as staff were retained as part of the job retention program of the government.

The restaurant, which opened in 1976 as a joint venture between actor Sir Michael Caine and Irish restaurateur Peter Langan, appointed the directors of financial advisory firm Begbies Traynor last month.

Mr Dubens, 54, who has built a fortune of around £ 150million according to The Sunday Times, is believed to be investing in the restaurant in his personal capacity, according to the Times.

The restaurant will reopen under the direction of food and beverage operating partner at Oakley Capital Graziano Arricale and James Hitchen next year.

Langan’s Brasserie posted on its website: “Langan’s will be painstakingly restored to its former glory: a bastion of timeless glamor, luxury – and escape.

Mr. Arricale posted a photo of himself outside of Langan alongside Mr. Hitchen on Instagram last month, captioned: “A new adventure begins. ”

Peter Langan moved from Ireland to London in the 1960s, starting his catering career at Odin’s in Devonshire Street.

But, according to the restaurant’s website, he had bigger dreams, wanting to bring Parisian coffee culture to London.

He teamed up with Sir Michael to transform Le Coq d’Or into Brasserie Langan, with original artwork, a change of lighting, live jazz and a famous relaxed atmosphere – no dress code.

A year later, in 1976, they were joined by Richard Shepherd, the former chef at the Michelin-starred Capital Hotel in London.

Shepherd, who still has an interest in the business, created a menu that the restaurant still touts today has “changed very little” in nearly 40 years.

With its signature dish of spinach soufflé and anchovy sauce, the restaurant quickly became a success.

In 2018, a sketch of David Hockney for Langan’s Brasserie menu was expected to fetch £ 500,000 after the veteran actor put it on sale.

The 1977 drawing, in colored pencils and pencil, showed Caine with co-owners Peter Langan and Richard Shepherd in their Mayfair restaurant.

Langan died at the age of 47 in December 1988, several weeks after a fire at his home in Essex that he himself allegedly started.

The Langan name was retained by the restaurant and Richard Shepherd subsequently purchased Michael Caine’s stake in the business to become the sole owner of Langan’s Brewery.

As a chain, the business has expanded to other locations, including Langan’s Bistro in Paston Place, Brighton, which has since closed.

Another Langan brewery was opened in 1986 by Langan in, Essex, near his home.

In July 1998, Richard Shepherd opened Langan’s Coq d’Or in Earls Court, which now operates under the restaurant name Rocca.
